CORRESPONDENCE

One of the quirks of railway life was the many memos which were sent back and forth between staff and management.  These were written in time honoured formats.  Most were banal, a few were silly.  Here are some of the better ones.  All these memos were actually written, although most were not to or from me.

Subject: Delay to 0756 Orpington to Victoria.

Please explain why on (date) the 0756 Orpington to Victoria was delayed 20 minutes at Sydenham Hill due to a passenger being taken ill.

From: Guard xxxx, Orpington.
Subject Delay to 0756 Orpington to Victoria.

Sir,
On (date) the 0756 Orpington to Victoria was delayed 20 minutes at Sydenham Hill because a passenger was taken ill.

To: Roster Office, Orpington
From  Guard Hayles, Grove Park
Subject: Compensatory leave

Sir, For personal reasons, may I take one day's compensatory leave on (date)

To: Guard Hayles, Grove Park
From : Roster Clerk, Orpington
Subject: Compensatory leave.

Bill, you pratt, it's your rest day.  Would you like me to mark you "not available"?

(This train was always a problem - it was the only one NOT booked to call at Denmark Hill)
